Mercedes A and B Service
Mercedes cars are known for their premium look and feel. But if you don’t take care of your vehicle, you could end up with a big repair bill. You may even be left stranded at the side of the road after breaking down because you have missed routine service schedules. Luckily, at Links Automotive, we help Mercedes owners with maintenance and repairs across all models.
During the late 2000s, Mercedes began working with a new maintenance schedule for all new vehicles and it is broken down into two types, Mercedes A and Mercedes B service. This helps both owners and technicians work out which service their vehicle needs and when that service is due.
Most people are unaware of these service types in their Mercedes and do not know what A and B mean. At Links Automotive, we have created this ultimate A and B service guide for Mercedes owners.
Read on to find out what each service involves and when you should be servicing your Mercedes.

Mercedes A Service – What Does It Include?
When your Mercedes leaves the factory, it follows a dedicated service schedule. The first essential service, known as the A Service, typically occurs at 10,000 miles and includes the following checks and maintenance:
- Oil Replacement: Your Mercedes engine uses synthetic motor oil, which is replaced to ensure proper lubrication and cooling.
- Oil Filter Replacement: The oil filter is changed to prevent harmful particles from entering the engine and causing damage.
- Tyre Inflation Check and Adjustment: Proper tyre pressure is essential for fuel efficiency, even tyre wear, and overall vehicle safety.
- Brake System Inspection: A thorough check of the brake system and its components is carried out to ensure everything is functioning correctly.
- Service Reset and Records Update: Once the service is complete, the technician will reset any dashboard warning messages and update your Mercedes service records in the system or logbook.
Mercedes B Service – What Does It Include?
The Mercedes B Service is typically performed one year after the A Service. It’s a more thorough service designed to maintain and replace additional parts.
The B Service typically involves the following:
- Oil Replacement: Your Mercedes engine uses synthetic motor oil, which is replaced to ensure proper lubrication and cooling.
- Oil Filter Replacement: The oil filter is also changed to prevent harmful particles from entering the engine and causing damage.
- Cabin Air Filter Replacement: The cabin air filter is replaced to keep your cabin free of dust and pollen.
- Tyre Inflation Check and Adjustment: Proper tyre pressure is checked and adjusted for fuel efficiency, even tyre wear, and vehicle safety.
- Brake System Inspection: A detailed inspection of the brake system and its components ensures they are functioning correctly.
- Service Reset and Records Update: After the service is complete, the technician will reset any dashboard warnings and update your Mercedes service records in the system or logbook.
These A and B Services alternate each year, ensuring your Mercedes stays in peak condition.
A and B Services for Older Mercedes Vehicles
For older Mercedes vehicles, you might notice a number alongside the A or B service warning on your dashboard, such as A5 or B7. These numbers indicate additional service requirements beyond the standard A and B services.
Here’s what each one means:
- A0 or B0 Service: Clean and lubricate the sunroof and renew spark plugs for specific models.
- A1 or B1 Service: Replace the brake fluid.
- A2 or B2 Service: Replace the brake fluid and clean and lubricate the sunroof.
- A3 or B3 Service: Replace the air filter and renew the spark plugs.
- A4 or B4 Service: Replace the air filter, renew spark plugs, and clean and lubricate the sunroof.
- A5 or B5 Service: Replace the air filter, replace brake fluid, and renew spark plugs.
- A6 or B6 Service: Replace the air filter, replace brake fluid, renew spark plugs, and clean and lubricate the sunroof.
- A7 or B7 Service: Replace the automatic gearbox oil and gearbox filter.
- A8 or B8 Service: Replace the automatic gearbox oil gearbox filter and clean and lubricate the sunroof.
- A9 or B9 Service: Replace the automatic gearbox oil, gearbox filter, and brake fluid.
These additional service tasks help ensure that your older Mercedes continues to perform reliably. If you’re unsure what service your vehicle requires, our experts at Links Automotive are here to help.
How To Work Out When Your Mercedes Needs Servicing
On your dashboard, there should be a light and service message indicating when your next service is due. You may also find it in your vehicle settings menu.
To access it, go to the ‘service’ menu on your dashboard screen in your Mercedes. From here, select the ASSYST PLUS feature. It will inform you when you need to take your vehicle in for a service, alongside which service is required (A or B).

Case Study: Mercedes C-Class Service
A client recently visited us for a routine B Service on their Mercedes C-Class. With a busy schedule, they appreciated our immediate offer of a courtesy car, allowing them to continue their day while we got to work on their vehicle.
Our skilled team performed the following checks and maintenance:
- Inspected the windows, wipers, lights, and mirrors.
- Checked the horn, hazard lights, air conditioning, and seat belts.
- Assessed the steering, suspension, and drive system.
- Examined the brake pads, discs, and brake fluid.
- Inspected under the bonnet for any faults or leaks.
- Replaced the air filter, oil filter, spark plugs, and belts with genuine parts, if necessary.
- Inspected beneath the vehicle, removed trays, drained oil, and checked the transmission for leaks, rust, or corrosion.
- Measured tyre pressure, tread depth, and wheel alignment.
- Topped up the antifreeze level as needed.
- Measured and refilled the engine oil.
- Updated the service history.
During the inspection, our technicians noticed uneven brake wear on the C-Class. After discussing it with the owner, we replaced the front brake pads and ensured the wheels were properly aligned. By catching the issue early, we helped the client avoid more costly repairs down the line.
We performed this alongside a brake disc replacement to make sure that the vehicle would stop effectively and had consistent brake pressure in all four corners. Our team also inspected suspension components to confirm that the issue will not repeat itself.
We inflated the tyres to the appropriate pressures and performed a wheel alignment to ensure precise handling and braking. Then, we replaced the oil and oil filter, and to finish the job, we reset the service light and updated the vehicle service records.
During each service and repair, we follow strict Mercedes guidelines and make sure that your vehicle is within specification. Excellent customer service: our attention to detail is reflected in our reviews, and we ensure that every customer gets the best treatment possible.
