The All-In-One Guide to Audi Brake Pads

Understanding how brake pads function is key to recognising their importance in your vehicle’s brake system. Here’s what happens when you hit the brake pedal:

  • Creating Friction: Pressing the brake pedal causes hydraulic pressure via the brake fluid to activate the brake caliper. This action forces the brake pads to clamp onto the brake disc, generating friction.
  • Stopping or Slowing Down: The friction between the brake pads and the discs reduces the wheel rotation, slowing down or stopping your vehicle.
  • Heat Management: Braking generates a lot of heat. To prevent brake fade, which is a reduction in braking efficiency due to heat, brake systems are designed to manage and dissipate this heat. Features like cooling fins or ventilation holes in disc brakes help in this process.
  • Releasing Brake Pressure: When you release the brake pedal, the hydraulic pressure drops, allowing the brake pads to retract from the discs, enabling smooth vehicle movement.

Over time, the constant friction and heat can cause your brake pads to wear down, becoming thinner and less effective. This can leave your safety at risk, meaning your  brake pads must be replaced.

Audi provides specific guidelines for brake pad replacement intervals. To ensure your brakes stay in top condition, we recommend regular inspections by trusted Audi specialists like us at Links Automotive.

Brake Pad Replacement Signs

Wondering if your Audi needs new brake pads? Keep an eye out for these key indicators:

  • Squeaking or Squealing Noises: Hearing unusual sounds when braking? It’s often a sign that your brake pads are wearing out.
  • Increased Stopping Distance: If your Audi takes longer to stop than usual, it clearly indicates reduced braking efficiency, likely due to worn brake pads. This puts your safety and that of others on the road at risk.
  • Vibrations in the Brake Pedal: Feeling a vibration under your foot when you apply the brakes? This could mean uneven wear on your brake pads or rotors. In such cases, you might also notice your steering wheel shaking.
  • Dashboard Warning Light: Modern Audi models have sensors to alert you when your brake pads are wearing thin. Keep an eye out for a warning light on your dashboard, and if it shows… Don’t ignore it.
  • Visual Inspection of Brake System: Generally, it’s time for new brake pads when the existing ones wear down to 3 mm or less. If you’re unsure how to check this, it’s best to consult professionals (like us).

Notice any of these signs? Don’t put your safety at risk. Contact Links Automotive for a comprehensive inspection and replacement.

The Different Types of Audi Brake Pads Available

Audi brake pads come in three varieties: organic, semi-metallic, and ceramic.

  • Organic pads are quieter and gentler but often wear down faster.
  • Though they can be noisier, semi-metallic pads offer better heat dissipation and performance.
  • Ceramic pads, typically the most expensive, deliver superior performance with less dust and noise.

At Links Automotive, we ensure that your Audi gets the highest quality brake pads that suit your vehicle’s needs and budget. Our experienced technicians are here to provide you with the best options for your Audi.

You’ll even get better-than-dealership value with us, too. What’s not to like?

How Our Technicians Replace Brake Pads

Your Audi brake system is complex and requires the experience and skill of a professional. Thankfully, our Audi specialists have decades of experience working on all Audi models and can replace your brake pads with no problems.

Here’s an overview of how our expert team handles the brake pad replacement process:

  • Your Audi is brought into our workshop and safely lifted into the air on one of our vehicle lifts.
  • After removing the wheel nuts, we remove the wheel to access the brake system.
  • The brake caliper, usually held by two bolts, is then carefully accessed, and the bolts are removed.
  • We then proceed to remove the old brake pads from the caliper bracket.
  • Your Audi caliper piston is gently pushed back to accommodate the new, thicker brake pads.
  • The pad mounting surfaces are cleaned up and some lubricating paste is added to mounting surfaces, then the new brake pads are fitted into the mounting carrier.
  • Your caliper is then reattached over the new pads and secured with bolts.
  • The wheel is put back in place, and the bolts are loosely tightened.
  • Your Audi is carefully lowered back to the ground from the vehicle lift.
  • Once your car is on the ground, we tightly secure the wheel bolts using the correct torque setting.
  • We conduct multiple brake pedal tests to ensure the new pads are correctly seated and functioning. We then check and correct the brake fluid  level if necessary.
  • Finally, we carry out a road test to bed the new brake pads in.

Please note this is a simplified outline. The specifics will vary based on your Audi model and year.
