VW Caddy in Limp Mode
The last thing you want as a VW owner is to be cruising along in your VW Caddy when suddenly the dreaded “limp mode” kicks in. When this happens, your speed is suddenly limited to between 30-50 mph. So what do you do? Ignoring the issue will only make it worse and make fixing it more costly. The only option at this point is to contact VW-specialists, like Links Automotive.
Our expert VW technicians at our Macclesfield garage can help you out, no matter what the problem. Just like they did for a recent client of ours…
Our client brought their VW Caddy to our garage when it had overheated and gone into limp mode. Luckily, our VW specialists had seen this problem before and knew how to fix it.

Diagnosing the Problem
During the initial assessment, our VW experts noticed several warning lights on our client’s dashboard. It’s no surprise that their VW Caddy had gone limp!
When your vehicle detects an issue that could cause further damage, it will enter limp mode. With limp mode restricting the speed of the vehicle, it helps to prevent additional damage and has saved our client hundreds of pounds on repairs.
Their dashboard displayed the following warning lights:
- Engine Management Light
- Glow Light
Our VW specialists confirmed that limp mode was activated and that the engine was overheating. One thing that surprised us was that in just two years, the client’s Caddy accumulated more than 125k miles, which is a staggering amount of miles. Especially when you consider that the average UK vehicle travels 7500 miles per year.
For our specialists to successfully resolve the Caddy’s issues, a closer inspection was required.
Exploring the VW Caddy Issues
At Links Automotive, we find and solve all problems using a 15-step diagnostic process. This allows us to identify the problem quickly, saving you time, stress, and money on repeat repairs.
As a first step, our VW experts carried out a diagnostic check to determine if any fault codes were present.
The following fault codes were found:
- P20FD00 – Reductant Pump ‘B’ Control Circuit High
- P200200 – Particulate Trap (Bank 1) Efficiency Below Threshold
- P208B00 – Reduction Pump A Control Range/Performance
- U041600 – Invalid Data Received From Vehicle Dynamics Control Module
- P023B00 – Charge Air Coolant Control Circuit Low
- P023A00 – Charge Air Cooler Coolant Pump Control Circuit/Open
Fortunately, our client brought his VW Caddy to Links Automotive. We have decades of experience reading these VW fault codes and most importantly, resolving them.
In contrast to many other garages, we run live data checks. Using the fault codes and live data we gathered, we were able to develop a testing plan to diagnose these issues.
Our specialists came to two conclusions based on the testing procedures:
- Low pressure in the EGR valve (Exhaust Gas Recirculation valve – an important component of a vehicle’s emission control system) and cooler, due to a blockage, creates a DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) problem.
- An issue with the water pump, which resulted in a coolant flow issue, hence the overheating.
As a result of narrowing down the issues, our VW experts were able to resolve the Caddy’s problems.
Bringing the VW Caddy Back to Life
In order to begin work on the VW Caddy, our specialists met with the client to discuss the plan of action. Whenever you bring your vehicle to Links Automotive, you are always kept informed and in control because we only begin work after you approve us to do so.
By removing the blockage, the correct amount of pressure could flow through the EGR valve. Our technicians have the skills and knowledge to perform the task without damaging the valve.
Once the EGR valve had been cleaned, the pressure was tested, and the valve was once again functioning correctly. As soon as the DPF issue was resolved, our technicians turned their attention to the coolant issue.
As mentioned, the water pump had failed, so a replacement was required. All repairs, maintenance, and servicing at Links Automotive are performed using only genuine VW or high-quality parts. So with that in mind, our technicians sourced and installed a new VW-branded water pump to complete the fix.Having solved the coolant issue, the Caddy was no longer overheating.
At Links Automotive, our goal is to be able to book you in, inspect, repair, and return your car to you before the local VW dealership could. We achieved this for our client!
With their Volkswagen Caddy’s engine back to full power, our client was overjoyed with the results and the speed and quality of the fix.

In Summary
Recently, a client of ours at Links Automotive brought their VW Caddy to us because it had gone into “Limp mode” and was overheating.
During our 15-step diagnostic process, our VW specialists discovered two issues:
- A damaged water pump
- A DPF blockage
Fortunately, our experts have dealt with these issues before. Our technician cleaned the blocked DPF, removing all soot from the EGR valve. In addition, we successfully installed a VW genuine replacement water pump. Ultimately, we returned the keys to a very happy client who was glad they had their VW Caddy back in great working condition with better-than-dealership value.
