Audi Engine Management Light

Solved: Audi A6 Power Loss

Audi’s are high-end German vehicles known for their luxury, precise engineering, and excellent performance.

But what happens when your Audi loses power and stops performing as it should?

When a recent client brought their Audi A6 to our specialists at Links Automotive, their vehicle was showing an engine management light. And, to make matters worse, their vehicle was suffering from power loss.

Luckily, our Audi specialists had previously dealt with Audi power loss issues and were confident they could solve the problem.

Audi Engine Management Light

What we found

During the initial inspection, our Audi experts visually confirmed that the engine management light appeared once our client’s A6 was fired up.

From there, a test drive confirmed the Audi A6 power loss. The vehicle felt incredibly sluggish and wouldn’t go faster than 40mph. Our specialists believed the car had gone into “Limp Mode”.

Limp mode is a security feature that most modern vehicles have. It activates when your Audi has an issue to prevent further damage from occurring. During limp mode, it’s pretty common for vehicles to lose power and speed while non-essential functions switch off.

There are several reasons why the Audi A6 was in limp mode, including:

  • Faulty sensors
  • Transmission issues
  • Low fluid levels

These aren’t issues you want to ignore, as they could leave you with costly future repairs (and obviously a vehicle stuck in limp mode).

Our technicians knew that a closer inspection would be required to get to the bottom of the problem.

The Diagnosis

Before our Audi experts performed any in-depth checks, they performed a diagnostic test to see if any fault codes were present.

The test returned this fault code:

  • P0237 – Manifold Pressure/Boost Sensor G31 – Signal Too Low

While this might not mean much to you, to our Audi specialists, it gives them a direction.

At Links Automotive, we use a 15-step diagnostic process to solve all issues your vehicle has during the first visit. You save time, stress, and money with us.

Now our expert technicians had a direction and knew there was an issue with the sensors; they could begin a more in-depth look at the vehicle. To do so, our Audi experts used an Oscilloscope.

An Oscilloscope is a specialist piece of equipment that displays the voltage of certain vehicle parts. Using these readings, our technicians can hone in on the root cause of the problem. Using an Oscilloscope also allows us to check that the wiring isn’t at fault, preventing a misdiagnosis of the issue.

The readings revealed that the correct signals were coming from the Audi A6 Engine Control Unit (ECU), so there wasn’t an issue with the wiring. This confirmed that it was in fact the sensor that was defective.

Testing the waveform between parts (in the wiring) is something that other garages might have overlooked. While this time, the sensor was at fault, it could have been the wiring.

At Links Automotive, we take a more systematic approach. We always perform a thorough inspection to rule out any potential causes, saving you time and money wasted on fixes that won’t solve your vehicle’s problem.

Using these results, our Audi specialists deducted that our client’s vehicle needed a new Turbocharger pressure sensor.
