Diagnosing the Noise Coming From the Audi A1 Engine Bay
When the client brought their Audi A1 to our Macclesfield garage, one of our technicians heard the noise and immediately suspected what the problem could be. The mechanic’s extensive experience working with all Audi makes and models meant that they had dealt with this problem several times before.
During initial inspections, our technician was able to examine where the noise was coming from and isolated the problem to the timing chain/auxiliary belt drive area. Upon removing the auxiliary belt – the connection between various engine components – and then running the engine again, our technician noticed that the noise was now gone. In turn, this confirmed that the noise was coming from the auxiliary belt drive.
After further examination, our technician was able to confirm that the idler roller, AC compression and auxiliary belt tensioner were all working as they should, which meant that, through the process of elimination, the issue must be with the water pump.
This confirmed what our technician had suspected was the issue with the Audi A1 initially.
Providing the Fix
After our technician had confirmed that the fault was with the water pump inside the auxiliary belt drive, it was time to provide the fix.
When removing the water pump, our technician noticed that the pump was showing signs that coolant had leaked through it, due to the failure. If the client hadn’t visited us when they did, then the problem could have led to significant damage to the engine through overheating, which could have been extremely costly!
The next step was to replace the water pump and the auxiliary belt, due to damage, with high-quality replacement parts. Interestingly, our technician had pre ordered these parts when first hearing the Audi enter our car park, as they were sure these parts would be important to the fix, this saved our client a bit more time!
With the new water pump and the auxiliary belt in place, the coolant was renewed and the fix was complete. Strange noises were no longer a problem for this Audi A1!
