How to Solve Adblue Countdown Timer Fault in Audi A6
Diesel fuel has been around for decades and during that time it has not only made deep inroads into the transportation industry but also the car market. Many manufacturers have preferred selling diesel vehicles in the past to take advantage of the rising market demand.
Some people preferred buying diesel-powered vehicles to take advantage of the low price of diesel fuel. On top of that, diesel engines hardly ever broke down, so the reliability factor also played a role in promotion.
Out of all the various brands taking advantage of diesel fuel in Europe, Audi was one of those that risked putting a diesel engine in an executive car, like the Audi A6. It is safe to say, the gamble worked because the brand found a way to limit the engine’s rumble and sound leaking into the interior cabin. The ride experience was great and the reliability was fantastic. The only problem was, and is, emissions.
Even though Adblue was introduced more than a decade ago, to reduce the emissions produced by diesel vehicles, the effort was not enough to help the environment in the long run. Therefore, it was decided to phase out diesel vehicles.
But before that happens in 2030, people who are still driving diesel vehicles should get all the assistance they need to keep their cars in tip-top condition. After all, if a diesel car is working in perfect condition, it will produce fewer emissions.
One of our clients was unfortunate enough to experience an Adblue issue in their 2016 Audi A6, which directly affected the emissions their car produced. Mrs S drove into Links Automotive and explained the situation in detail. She complained about an Adblue countdown timer issue that was affecting her vehicle.
Our lead Audi technician, Aaron White, listened to her with intent and started to think about all the things that could affect the car’s Adblue system.

Faults Found
Aaron’s first task was to confirm and verify the problem at hand. If he saw the issue himself, the repair would get a lot easier. Therefore, our A6 technician inspected the vehicle and interestingly he found a few pointers that would help steer his repair work in the right direction.
The dash was showing an Adblue warning and the countdown was not resting even after refilling the relevant liquid. It seemed that the Engine Management System (EMS) and the Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) systems were malfunctioning.
The client told us that once the Adblue warning flashed in the dash, she took the car to the dealer for repairs. They suggested there was a problem in some unrelated component and performed a software update to solve the issue. The repair didn’t work, and the dealer still charged the client.
She had therefore searched online to find a local Audi specialist and found Links Automotive. A quick review of our blogs and customer reviews cemented her view that we were the right team to help her get to the bottom of her Audi A6 Adblue issue.
Our Audi technician summoned his years of experience and knowledge working on Adblue issues to help solve the A6 problem. He was sure there was nothing else wrong in the vehicle, apart from the two major systems.
But to be completely sure, our Audi specialist initiated the comprehensive 15-step diagnostic procedure – which is a standard at Links Automotive. Our entire team of technicians uses in-depth diagnosis to help solve problems faster and more effectively.
Diagnostic Procedure

Aaron did not waste a minute before starting the 15-step diagnostic procedure. He had to find and treat the underlying fault before employing the solution.
First, he went on a short test drive in the Audi A6, to ensure everything was in order. Most issues of this nature require a test drive to better understand the problem and its causes. So, our Audi technician drove around in the car, hoping for the fault to reveal itself. Luckily, the issue presented itself quite quickly and Aaron was able to confirm his suspicions.
He scanned the vehicle for relevant fault codes, using the ODIS Audi Manufacturer tool and found a few errors related to the SCR system. Aaron was now sure that the only way to solve the issue was to dive deep into the SCR system and look for anything out of the ordinary.
But before doing that, our Audi specialist performed live data checks to ensure the signals coming in and out of the SCR system were regular. Interestingly, something was off, which prompted Aaron to consult the history of other garages. Sometimes this simple step can considerably cut down the time required for a diagnosis.
However, on this occasion the search turned up nothing. But a minor setback like this motivated Aaron further and he switched his focus.
Next, our technician tested the fluid levels in the Adblue container and confirmed that the fluid inside was high-quality. Sometimes, clients put low-quality Adblue fluid into their cars to save money but they damage the car’s internals in the process. Luckily, Mrs S was not one of those people. She had used the recommended Adblue fluid in her A6.
Aaron was now stuck in a conundrum. The fluid was fine, the issue wasn’t common in the A6, and the software end of the vehicle was also perfect. Could it be that the issue was related to hardware components?
Our Audi technician had no other choice but to dive in deeper and look for himself. Interestingly, when he reached the Adblue pump, he found something interesting. The pump wasn’t producing the right amount of pressure to send the Adblue fluid to its destination. The culprit had been identified!
With the diagnosis done and dusted, Aaron moved on to the next step of the repair – the fix.
Solving The Problem
Our Audi expert tested and retested the Adblue pump but it wasn’t producing the required amount of pressure. The only way out was to replace the faulty component and install a new one in its place.
Aaron carefully removed the old pump and installed a new one in its place. He refilled the Adblue liquid and tested the pressure. Everything was working fine and the entire system was working as intended.
Afterwards, our Audi technician checked for error codes and got nothing concerning the fault in the scan. He cleared all the existing codes and called Mrs S to pick up her vehicle.
Summary
Our expert Audi technician put all his efforts into solving the fault in Mrs S’s 2016 Audi A6. He had to jump over several hurdles along the way, but none of them hurt Aaron’s unwavering confidence and trust in his skill, training, and experience.
